Following the highly successful event last year, the STEM Festival 2017 will be taking place at the Allia Future Business Centre on Sunday 1st October from 09:30 until 16:00. Riselabs will be in attendance at this year’s event, offering a range of Virtual Reality activities for young attendees.

About the Event

The STEM Festival promotes fun activities that stimulates young people’s interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. An event catering to families and young people in particular, it’s free to attend, and STEM Festival tickets are still available.

The STEM Festival 2017 is organised by Digital People in Peterborough (DPiP) and Allia Future Business Centre and is an official Ada Lovelace Day event. Ada Lovelace Day aims to celebrate and promote the role of women in STEM, named after Ada Lovelace, who is recognised as the first computer programmer.

Riselabs run the VR

Riselabs will be running a range of activities for young people, including education, creative and some gaming, too. We’ll be using a mixture of kit, with two HTC Vive’s in operation, along with an Oculus Rift.

With places already booked out, there will be the opportunity for young people to get creative with Google Tilt Brush and Google Blocks. The former allows you to immerse yourself in a 3D artistic environment, which you create yourself, whilst Google Blocks allows you to create 3D models in VR.

Attendees will also have the chance to use VR for exploring their environment. Google Earth has great capability in VR, allowing you to hover above some of the most impressive parts of the world. There’s also the opportunity for our attendees to do the same in the open spaces that exist in the fantastic VR game, The Lab.

Of course, many associate virtual reality with games, so a festival of this kind wouldn’t be complete without an opportunity to have a crack at the high score. For that, we’ll be going back to The Lab, which has addictive cartoon archery game, as well as Space Pirates, which goes some way to showing the gaming experience that can be had in VR at the moment. We look forward to seeing you at the STEM Festival this year!
